Reporting
racist incidents
to the police
There
has been an upsurge in racial incidents in Clitheroe in the past few years.
You can help by passing on the message: racial harassment is unacceptable.
We should all help to stop it.
You
can pick up a form for self-reporting of racist incidents at any library
or police stations. The form is called Take Action.
A
racist incident is any incident which is perceived to be racist by the
victim or any other person.
When
you have filled in the form you can:
- hand it in at the local police station
- post it to police headquarters.
If
it is an emergency of course you can ring 999. You can also contact the
Racial Harassment Project: 01254 695405.
You
can make your report anonymously if you wish. If you are prepared to talk
to the police the Minorities Team based in Accrington will contact you.
The Minorities Team officers are trained to be aware of the issues involved.
The police have interpreters for most languages.
The
police are very keen to hear about racist incidents. "We want to
encourage all victims to report incidents, secure in the knowledge that
they will be thoroughly investigated and accurately recorded,” said a
spokesman.
- Left unreported the attackers are free to
repeat similar offences.
- Some offenders think they can get away with
harassment because they won't get reported.
- You can help the police to build up patterns
of crime, providing better opportunities of catching offenders.
